Call for information after elderly woman injured in dog attack

Council is appealing for information to help locate the owner of a large dog that attacked a woman and her poodle outside a Sunshine Beach property on Monday night.

Local Laws Manager Phil Amson said the 73-year-old woman suffered a fractured pelvis and deep wounds to her elbow after being knocked to the ground trying to protect her dog.

She remains in hospital. Her small dog was also injured in the attack and required treatment totalling more than $1000.

“The elderly woman was understandably distressed but was able to provide a basic description of the dog involved,” Mr Amson said.

“We’re looking for a large, white, muscular breed dog, similar to a Bull Arab. The dog was not on a leash and we believe the man who was with the dog, fled with the dog and didn’t offer the elderly woman any assistance at the scene.

“Nearby residents came to her aid and called an ambulance.

“This is a very serious attack that happened not far from the woman’s home. We’re currently following up a number of leads and we’re appealing to the public to come forward with any information that may assist us.”

Mr Amson said the attack happened around 7pm on Monday, March 16, near a block of units at the intersection of Ben Lexcen Drive and Bicentennial Drive, Sunshine Beach.

“We’re asking anyone who may have witnessed this attack, or anyone who may know the dog’s owner, to contact Council on (07) 5329 6500,” Mr Amson said.
