Campground weeding project a success

A Council partnership with Noosa Landcare to weed and revegetate degraded parts of Noosa North Shore Beach Campground, ahead of a planned upgrade, has been a success.

Council property advisor Denis Wallace said most of the site was now weed-free, paving the way for Council to upgrade the campsite in May 2019.

Spokesman for Noosa Landcare, Phillip Moran, said that with support from the Green Army and Skilling Queenslanders for Work participants, at least 17 species of weeds had been removed from the site. The project had also equipped those involved in the weeding effort with new skills and an appreciation for coastal ecosystems.

“Noosa Landcare is pleased to be partnering with Noosa Council on this project to protect and enhance one of Noosa’s iconic areas,” Mr Moran said.

They’ve replanted much of the site with more than 8,000 native trees to date.

“Noosa Landcare has done a fantastic job restoring the rural areas. As a result of the weeding alone we’re already seeing native vegetation, such as tuckeroos and cheese trees, grow back,” Mr Wallace said.

The campsite upgrade is now set to start in May 2019.

While work has been delayed slightly to allow for further planning of site improvements, the new timing was good news for campers, Mr Wallace said.

“It means that it will be business as usual for the campsite over the busy summer and Easter holiday periods – welcome news for the many people who flock to the campground at these times.”

He said the Campground was still taking bookings for the December/January school holidays.

The $2M upgrade will deliver new amenities and toilets, new reception area and a revamped camp kitchen. The site upgrade also includes additional powered sites.
