New bridge for Cooran’s Old Noosa Road

Construction will start on a $1.5M replacement for the Old Noosa Road Bridge at Cooran in mid-August.

Infrastructure Services Director, Carl Billingham said, “Council is pleased to deliver this new bridge, which has been made possible by an Australian Government grant.

“The Bridges Renewal Program grant is contributing approximately half of the cost of this project,” Mr Billingham said.

“This is a much-needed hinterland project and Council is pleased to jointly fund this important piece of hinterland infrastructure.”

The current, single-lane timber bridge has a load limit of only 16 tonnes.

“The new, single-lane concrete bridge will have a load-limit of 44 tonnes. It will be longer and wider than the old bridge. It will have safety barriers and it’s been designed to last 100 years.

“The new bridge will be a much better bridge and is designed to serve the community for generations to come.”

The bridge will be under construction for four months and it is due to reopen in December, weather permitting.

“There will be detours during construction, so we apologise ahead for any inconvenience and urge local residents to plan ahead,” said Mr Billingham.

“People with vehicles lower than 3.3 metres in height will have a 7.7 kilometre detour via Greenridge Pinbarren, Traveston, Howe and Old Noosa Roads.

“Unfortunately, due to the low height of the railway bridge at Traveston, people with vehicles more than 3.3 metres in height will need to take a longer detour via Greenridge Pinbarren and Traveston Roads, then via the Bruce Highway, Hall, Noosa and Old Noosa Roads.”
