Stories and slime in Science Week program

Noosa Library Service is getting into the Science Week spirit with a program of activities to encourage interest in the subject.

Creating slime and experimenting with 3D printing are just some of the activities on offer from August 14 to 20.

“There will be something for all ages to enjoy in our week-long interactive National Science Week program,” says Literacy and Learning Coordinator Tracey King.

“The program will start with coding and robotics programs delivered at the Noosa Flexible learning school. Coding Kids, an organisation committed to promoting and supporting digital literacy in schools, will give the Flexible Learning students hands-on experiences in programming and robotics through a series of workshops held over two days.”

Ms King said the Library encouraged the community to learn coding and robotics as part of its Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) program.

“STEM-related learning is now considered a priority to support the digital and economic success of our community,” she said.

Cooroy Library will host Stories for Young Scientists from 10am, Wednesday, August 15.

“Science based storytelling will be followed by a scientific discovery walk. It also wouldn’t be National Science Week without the popular Scientific Slime workshop,” Ms King said.

Delivered by local students Mia and Amy, children aged from eight years and up can explore chemical reactions and sensory science as they make their own slime.

A range of 3D printer workshops are planned. These will focus on both the design and printing process to give participants a better understanding of this new and important technology.

The Library will host a demonstration for those who would like to see 3D printers in action but not necessarily want to be hands-on.

“Or if you’d like to try your hand at 3D printing, you can choose to make your own charm (for ages 12+), make a key chain (for ages 18+) or seniors can make their own luggage tag.”

This Inspiring Australia initiative is supported by the Australian Government as part of National Science Week.
