New car parking policy answers call for flexibility

A new Council car parking policy answers the call by some in the development industry for increased flexibility.

The policy will allow developers to contribute to transport and off-site parking initiatives in lieu of providing onsite parking required by the Noosa Plan.

Following Council's endorsement of the policy at Thursday's Ordinary Meeting, property developers can apply to make a financial contribution in lieu of either some or all of their onsite parking, in certain circumstances and subject to Council approval.

Environment and Sustainable Development Director Kim Rawlings says the changes pave way for better development and transport outcomes.

This is particularly so in areas such as Noosa Junction and Hastings Street where development is constrained by small lot sizes with limited capacity to add parking spaces, Ms Rawlings said. However, the policy can be applied in other areas, including hinterland towns.

“Local commercial property owners have told us that inflexible parking provisions are impeding their options for smaller sites. We’ve listened, and this new policy responds to this issue,” Ms Rawlings said.

Applicants will need to work closely with Council staff if wishing to provide a financial contribution in lieu of their onsite car parking.

Contributions received may be expended on improving car parking in the general location of the development or else on transport infrastructure.

“Not only does this new policy support better development outcomes, it supports the aims of our Transport Strategy – to find smarter ways of moving people around the Shire,” Ms Rawlings said.
