Local firm set to start work on Main Beach boardwalk 'missing link'

Council has appointed local construction firm Ri-con to upgrade the final piece of Noosa’s Main Beach boardwalk.

Work on the project, which will see the stretch of boardwalk between Noosa Heads Surf Club and Park Road replaced, will start on May 21.

Project Officer Jaro Bauleka said Council had incorporated learnings from the upgrade of previous sections of the boardwalk and designed the new structure to be low-maintenance.

The new section will consist of timber decking above a concrete slab.

“This will minimise the timber boards warping, which happens when the undersides are in contact with the damp sand and the tops are exposed to the hot sun,” Mr Bauleka said.

“The design also means we can easily remove the boards and hose any built up sand beneath the boards back on to the beach.”

The upgrade will deliver a Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) compliant, four-metre wide boardwalk, improved lighting and seating, and rock retaining walls to replace the old timber retaining walls.

“All together it will be a much more visually appealing walk for all users, and it’s also more sustainable with the design using a sixth of the timber of the traditional boardwalk,” Mr Bauleka said.

“This is the missing link that will complete the full upgrade of the Main Beach boardwalk.”

Work will finish in early August, weather permitting.

“Ri-con has nominated a highly capable team for this project and with their experience on similar major projects, Council is confident the Main Beach boardwalk upgrade is in good hands,” Mr Bauleka said.
