Have a say on planning for sea-level rise and other coastal hazards
Council will run a series of community pop-ups and an online forum to gauge which natural and built assets the community values most.
“We’re asking residents to tell us the parts of our coastline they’d like prioritised in planning for future sea level rise, plus other climate-related coastal hazards such as erosion, storm tide events and inundation,” says Council’s Climate Change Adaptation Program Coordinator, Grant Hinner.
“These could be natural areas such as wetlands and beaches or infrastructure such as buildings, walkways and roads.”
The Noosa Climate Change Adaptation Plan (CCAP) will outline both short and long-term actions to overcome or minimise the impacts of a changing climate to important assets and values.
“The amount of coastal area affected by erosion and storm tide events is projected to expand in coming decades as a result of sea-level rise. Developing a well-informed long-term plan, and then appropriate levels of action today, will cost us less in the long-term and better ensure the lifestyle that we all love continues well into the future.”
Mr Hinner said from May 4 residents could visit Council's Your Say Noosa website to identify, via a map, their special coastal places and complete a short survey.
“These places might have personal, social, economic, cultural or environmental value, or a combination of these. This information will help to inform subsequent phases of the project, being conducted by independent experts on behalf of Council,” he said.
Alternatively, Council staff and the project team will be available to discuss the project and collect feedback at a series of planned ‘pop-ups’.
“I strongly encourage people interested in the future of Noosa to come along to learn more about this important topic and have their say,” Mr Hinner said.
