Boardwalk rebuild kicks off
Noosa Council has started work on the upgrade of the Park Road boardwalk from Little Cove beach to the entrance of the Noosa National Park.
Councillor Jess Glasgow said the new section of boardwalk would be a world-class piece of community infrastructure Noosa could be proud of.
“We hope the upgraded section of the boardwalk will be an iconic experience to any visit to Noosa, with expanded viewing platforms, improvements to existing stairway accesses, and resting stops at key viewing sites,” Cr Glasgow said.
“This is a piece of infrastructure residents too will enjoy. Surfers heading to the water with their boards will appreciate the new wider walkway, while the built-in seating will offer locals and visitors the perfect place to take in the view.
“The boardwalk is intended to blend into its natural surrounds. The curving balustrade and natural ‘accoya’ timber will ensure the boardwalk is unique, yet doesn’t detract from the beautiful view of Laguna Bay.
“Showcasing the local environment was a priority when designing the boardwalk, with significant trees incorporated and very limited tree loss anticipated,” Cr Glasgow said.
“The construction process will also show care and respect for the surrounding environment with a number of environmental specialists on hand to make sure the local flora and fauna is being protected.
“These outcomes have been endorsed by the Project Reference Group, which was established to get community input on critical issues about the project. This group has made valuable contribution to the project and we will continue to seek their feedback during the construction process.”
Cr Glasgow said Park Road would be reduced to one lane from Thursday 26 April 2018 until the project was complete.
“The lane closure is required to ensure the safety of workers given the close proximity of the boardwalk to the road, and to allow enough room for machinery and equipment,” he said.
“Traffic will flow in a one-way loop from Park Road up Alderley Terrace and down Mitti Street. Temporary traffic signals and a reduced speed limit will be in place, as well as barriers and signage to guide motorists safely through the site.
“Pedestrians will be required to use an alternative pathway to access the National Park from Little Cove. Those with prams and in wheelchairs need to be aware that this path unfortunately includes stairs.
“We appreciate the community’s and motorists’ patience while the project is underway.”
Preliminary works started on Monday 16 April 2018 to establish site facilities, conduct surveying, and construct a temporary footpath. Traffic control is on site to direct motorists, as required.
The project will be completed by mid-December 2018, weather permitting. For more information visit Council's Your Say Noosa website.
