Floating Land sculptures unveiled
Noosa River’s banks will soon be dappled with sculpture as Council’s 2017 Floating Land festival begins.
Artworks will begin appearing along the foreshores of Tewantin, Gympie Terrace and Noosa Woods from this week. They’ll be on display until October 2.
Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington said Floating Land’s strong focus on nature made it an arts festival unlike many others.
“Floating Land offers an opportunity to view sculptural works in the beautiful Noosa landscape,” the Mayor said. “Each artwork encourages us to reflect on the natural environment and humankind’s association with it.
“While the artworks may leave an impression on our minds, the event prides itself on leaving no lasting mark on the natural environment.”
Libraries and Galleries Manager, Kerri Contini, said the sixteen major sculptural installations showcased 15 artists’ work.
“Artists must respond to an environmental theme and ensure the techniques and materials they use are environmentally sensitive,” Ms Contini said.
“We hope the high quality range of artistic talents will delight visitors and stimulate discussion.
“The Floating Land festival also offers a diverse public program featuring community events, artist talks, arts workshops and children’s activities.”
Ms Contini said ‘Rainsong’, from 5pm, October 1, at Noosa Woods, was sure to be a highlight. “This free community event will showcase live music, sculpture, indigenous dance, and light projections.”
