Council's planners drafting The New Noosa Plan

Back

Council’s planners are busy drafting Noosa’s new  planning scheme after analysing all of the submissions and input the community provided during an extensive consultation process in late 2016.

The New Noosa Plan is a major project for Council – one that will help shape Noosa through to 2036. Council’s planners will be busy drafting the new plan until the end of 2017.

Mayor Tony Wellington said: “The draft South East Queensland Regional Plan predicted that Noosa will grow to 63,000 residents by 2041. If correct, this implies a need for another 6000 homes to accommodate that growth.

“We have to allow for such growth, but at the same time, it is vital to retain the important characteristics that have shaped Noosa. This includes respect for, and preservation of, our outstanding local environment.

“Our community has informed us, through the consultation process, that they don’t want urban sprawl and that they support low building heights and the preservation of public open space.

“It is a huge challenge for our planners to develop a plan that balances all of these competing forces so that Noosa can continue to prosper and that all our residents enjoy a quality lifestyle.

"We also need a new plan that accommodates changes in modern business practices, particularly the shift towards multi-purpose activity centres that accommodate a range of businesses, community spaces and mixed-use development.”

The new plan will consider a host of issues including emerging business needs, the challenges of productive rural enterprise, housing needs, transport and parking and the predicted effects of climate change.

Once Council endorses a draft of the New Noosa Plan, Council will send it to the state government for review. Once it returns from the state government, the community will be given another opportunity to provide feedback.

The final phase of community consultation is anticipated to commence in late 2018.
