Young women needed to shape new 'Get Out, Get Active' program

Female? Between 18 and 24 and struggling to stay active? Then Noosa Council wants to hear from you.

A new program, to start next year, aims to provide young women access to low-cost activities to help them stay active.

But before the new program can begin, says Council Community Development Officer Amanda Tie, Council needs to find out the sorts of activities young women would take part in.

Activities could be anything from stand-up paddling, traditional sports, mountain biking, yoga or belly dancing.

“So we’re calling for young women aged between 18 and 24 to jump online and fill out a quick survey. We’ll use the information we collect to tailor the program to young women’s needs.”

Ms Tie said Noosa had no physical activity programs specifically tailored to young women. Council has received a $10,000 grant from State Government’s Get Out, Get Active program to fill that gap.

“Statistics tell us that for a range of reasons, including work, family and study commitments, young women between 18 and 24 don’t get enough exercise or physical activity,” Ms Tie said.

There are short and long term health benefits for women simply by increasing their level of regular physical activity.

“Locally, gym staff tell us women of this age group are also under-represented among their members. Even if girls have taken part in school-based sport during high school, often they give it away once they leave and join the workforce or further study.

“This program aims to link young women with low-cost activities to help them stay active.”

The survey is online now via Council's YourSay Noosa website. It will be open until Friday 11 August.

Ms Tie said Council was also keen to hear from sport and active recreation businesses or not-for-profit groups interested in partnering with Council to deliver the program activities.
