Council to host free screening of A Plastic Ocean
The J will screen A Plastic Ocean on Tuesday, 11 July.
The documentary, described by Sir David Attenborough as “one of the most important films of our time”, exposes the immense toll disposable plastic has on our oceans.
Tim Silverwood from TV’s War on Waste will run a panel discussion following the free screening.
Deputy Mayor Frank Wilkie said the film was a must-see for anyone interested in the current state of the world’s oceans.
“The more we can do to reduce our use of plastic bags and packaging, the better,” Cr Wilkie said.
“Taking a bag with us for shopping, our own cup for takeaway coffee and using a reusable drink bottle. These small things add up.”
Noosa Council has partnered with Unitywater and Noosa Community Biosphere Association (NCBA) to bring Tim Silverwood to town, with Council and NCBA to host the film screening.
The consultant, educator and CEO of Take 3 for the Sea says Australians’ reaction to War on Waste has been positive.
“We don't like to see the impacts of our consumption. But the hard truth is that we are among the highest producers of waste per capita in the world,” he says.
“I'm excited to be visiting the region to continue the conversation and to highlight that action on plastic pollution is critically important if we care about the health of our oceans and broader environment."
The discussion panel will include Toby Hutcheon from Boomerang Alliance, Mandy Botterell from EnviroCom and Queensland Waste Educators Group, and Aaron Forsey from Surfrider Foundation.
Annually around 500 billion plastic bags are used worldwide. More than one million bags are used every minute. Each plastic bag has an average working life of 15 minutes.
A Plastic Ocean follows a team of international scientists and researchers as they travel the world investigating the fragile state of the oceans. More than eight million tonnes of plastic ends up in the ocean each year.
Tim Silverwood will also join St Thomas More students as they clean up Main Beach together for Art Action 4 Oceans, sponsored by Unitywater.
Bookings for the screening of A Plastic Ocean at The J are essential. It will be held at 6pm on July 11. Book online. For more information on the documentary, visit the website.
