Cash for community halls

Council's draft 2017/2018 budget includes more than $150,000 to spruce up the shire’s community halls.

Mayor Tony Wellington said the cash would cover painting and other repairs to at least six community hall facilities.

“This funding is on top of our usual annual allocation that keeps these facilities up and running,” he said. “Repainting will occur at both the Cooran and Federal Halls, plus the Pomona School of Arts Hall. We’ll also be providing protective termite barriers for the Tinbeerwah and Kin Kin Halls.

“Both the Tinbeerwah and Federal Halls will get specific repairs identified in a recent audit.

“We’ll be carrying out further fire and electrical safety checks to make sure the halls are as safe as possible for the many community groups that use them each week.

“Our halls are an important part of our community infrastructure. Living near the Tinbeerwah Hall, I see on a daily basis just how frequently these facilities are used and enjoyed,” the Mayor said.

“Of course these community halls are also a part of our local heritage. They each have a fascinating history.”

As well as the community halls, $50,000 will also be spent to improve safety, carry out repairs and make a range of site improvements at the Girraween Sports Complex. The Kin Kin Sport and Recreation building will also get a fresh coat of paint.

Council will ratify the 2017/18 budget on June 29.
