Watch out for koalas and other wildlife this spring

Be alert for koalas and other wildlife on local roads with the onset of warmer weather.

That’s the message from Council ahead of spring when animals and birds are more active.

“Spring is an important time of year for our local wildlife,” Principal Environment Officer Peter Milne said.

“We can all help keep koalas and other animals safe, particularly at night, by driving a little slower and being a little more vigilant on the roads.

“Koalas crossing roads are a particular concern,” he said.

“This happens more often in forested areas throughout the shire, but can happen anywhere. Motorists are urged to be extra careful when driving through forest areas, particularly between dusk and dawn when they’re most active.”

Sadly, a koala and baby koala were recently killed crossing a road at Noosa Heads, Mr Milne said.

Birds were also very active in spring, with some species displaying aggressive behaviour.

“Magpies, butcherbirds and even noisy miners become quite territorial during spring,” he said.

Residents are encouraged to avoid known magpie nesting areas as much as possible, and to wear hats and sunglasses.

“It’s not only sun-smart, but bird-smart as well,” he said.
