Turning trash into treasure in the name of art

Noosa Regional Gallery has launched ArtCycle 2017 as part of this year’s Floating Land festival.

It’s a competition that encourages residents to turn trash into treasure for a chance to win one of three cash prizes worth $4000.

Inspired by Council’s Toward Zero Waste campaign, ArtCycle challenges entrants to repurpose rubbish or old unwanted items into art.

The Tip Top Shop at Noosa’s Eumundi-Noosa Road landfill, op-shops or the back of your garage are the ideal places to source materials.

“Any artist whose entry is shortlisted will receive up to $100 toward the cost of any materials they bought from the Tip Top Shop and up to $50 toward any materials bought from garage sales or op-shops,” said Gallery Coordinator Nicole Maggs.

First prize is $2000 cash, second prize is $1500 and third prize is $500.

A people’s choice competition will decide the winner.

People can view the short-listed pieces and cast their vote between 9 September and 15 October at Noosa Regional Gallery.

“Similar competitions elsewhere have produced some simply stunning sculptures so we’re excited to see what weird and wonderful works of art Noosa residents can create,” Ms Maggs said.

“While a lot of fun and an artistic challenge, ArtCycle 2017 also reinforces the importance of reusing, repurposing and recycling to reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill – the aim of Council’s Towards Zero Waste initiative,” Councillor Ingrid Jackson added.

“Landfill space is finite so the more we can do to repurpose rubbish and other household items that may have served their original purpose, the better.”

Original works of art, sculpture, assemblage and jewellery or functional accessories are eligible to enter. They must be made from reused or recycled materials. Entries close 10 July 2017.
