Power outages and road closures soar in Noosa Shire

Over 9,500 homes are now without power in Noosa Shire across 12 areas including: Noosa Heads, Noosaville, Tewantin, Sunrise Beach, Cooroibah, Boreen Point, Cootharaba, North Shore, Lake MacDonald, Cooroy and Marcus, Peregian and Castaways Beaches.

Strong winds of over 60 kph with gusts up to 90kph between 5pm and 6pm have ripped branches from trees or felled them, sometimes across power lines.

Cr Joe Jurisevic, Chair of Local Disaster Coordination Centre said “Power lines are down in various parts of the shire, a number of roads are flooded and this is creating a dangerous situation.

There have been reports of trees falling on cars in Gympie Terrace, Noosaville.

“Police are warning residents to stay indoors and avoid driving. Remember, if it’s flooded, forget it,” he said.

The list of roads now cut by either floods or fallen trees continues to grow and includes a number of streets and roads in Noosa, Noosaville and Tewantin such as :Walter Hay Drive; Noosa Parade, Weyba Road, Carramar Street, Griffith Avenue, Sea Eagle Drive, St Andrews Drive, Sivyers Road, Moorindil Street, Butler Street, Gympie Terrace and Coral Tree Avenue.

These are in addition to the following:

Upper Pinbarren Road, Pinbarren;
Cooroy Mountain Road, Cooroy;
Railway Road, Cooran;
Pomona- Kin Kin Road, north of Cooran;
Kin Kin Road near the intersection of Eastern Branch Road;
Lake Entrance Boulevard between Satinash Street and Redgum Court, Noosaville;
Skyring Creek Road, off the Bruce Highway;
Subway Avenue at Pomona;
Old Hollett’s Road at Doonan;
Eumundi Road before Beckman’s Road;
Mill Street at Pomona; and

other minor roads.
