Highest annual tide set to add to Noosa's flood risk

The Bureau of Meteorology has advised that the weather is set to worsen this afternoon and that there is a serious risk of flash flooding for the Noosa’s coast and hinterland later today.

The highest annual tide will occur at 11pm tonight, exacerbating the potential for flooding in coastal areas.

Falls of between 150mm and 250 mm are likely with up 400mm falling in isolated areas of the hinterland.

There is potential for isolated, heavier falls occurring in short time frames, increasing the chances of flash flooding.

Thunderstorms are also forecasted for this afternoon and wind gusts of up to 120km may be experienced.

Rain is expected to ease when the winds change from northerlies to southerlies later tonight, however strong winds may remain.

Energex have 40 crews ready in the area to respond to power outages.

Road closures now include:

  • Lake Entrance Boulevard between Satinash Street and Redgum Court, Noosaville
  • Skyring Creek Road, off the Bruce Highway
  • Subway Avenue at Pomona
  • Old Hollett’s Road at Doonan
  • Eumundi Road before Beckman’s Road

The Local Disaster Centre Coordinator Alan (Fox) Rogers advises Noosa Shire residents to:

  • Keep off the roads, particularly after midday
  • If it’s flooded, forget it!

All schools are closed.

All bus travel in the Shire is free from 10am today.

Sandbags are available at:

  • Tewantin SES Depot at Goodwin Street opposite the Tewantin State School,
  • Bunnings in Noosa,
  • Cooroy SES Shed in Emerald Street
  • Pomona SES Shed in Hospital Street
  • Boreen Point SES Shed, where residents can fill their own.
