Active Mums program 'life-changing'

Women taking part in Noosa Council’s Active Mums program say it’s a great way to ease back into exercise and fitness after childbirth.

“All the ladies know exactly what you’re going through, all the instructors know exactly what you’re going through – that removed a huge barrier for me,” mother-of-one, Tara, said.

Fellow mum Sandra said the classes were a welcome alternative to the traditional gym environment.

“I tried the gym and did a couple of the classes but it really wasn’t for me, I didn’t like the competitive nature of it,” she said.

Tara and Sandra are among 320 mums to realise the benefits of the Noosa Council program, which provides free and affordable access to a wide range of activities in partnership with local businesses.

Council Community Development Officer Amanda Tie said the atmosphere was relaxed and supportive, with childcare available.

Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and places are still available in activities such as Pilates, yoga, stand-up paddling, core conditioning, boxfit, aqua aerobics, group fitness and more.

“All of the activities consider the physical constraints and limitations mums face after child birth,” Ms Tie said.

Mother-of-two Emma said Council’s Active Mums Noosa program had been life changing.

“I didn’t realise that I’d suffered from post-natal depression since I gave birth to my first son three years ago, but since coming to the Active Mums program I just feel like my sparkle has returned,” she said.

Sandra said: “This is a fantastic program that Noosa Council has been able to provide.”

“I keep coming back because I can see the results – I’ve got more energy and I have lost weight,” said mother-of-two, Nadja.

Activities are held at various locations from Sunshine Beach to Cooran. For more information visit the Active Mums Program page.

The Queensland Government provided $20,000 to Noosa Council for Active Mums Noosa to get women active for life.
