Noosa Regional Gallery announces 64 finalists in this year’s Noosa Art Award. Of the 64 finalists, 36 entrants are from the local area.

Gallery Director Nina Shadforth says the finalists’ works reflects the theme: the unique character of modern Australia’s coastal and hinterland environments, both urban and natural.

“The works in the running for the $10,000 prize include sculptures, paintings, photographs, projection and ceramics,” Ms Shadforth said.

“Noosa Art Award will be a wonderful showcase of contemporary artworks celebrating each artist’s interpretation of the theme.”

The winner will be announced at a public gala opening at Noosa Regional Gallery, from 5pm Saturday 7 May.

The Noosa Art Award is a national acquisitive contemporary art award, open to Australian artists and designers practising in any 2D or 3D medium.

Ms Shadforth says the Noosa Art Award’s second iteration attracted interest from outstanding artists across the country, with some of the finalists based as far away as Western Australia and Tasmania.

“The number of entries has exceeded our expectations. We are looking forward to seeing the works presented in the Gallery,” she said.

“Gallery visitors will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite work in the People’s Choice award sponsored by Friends Noosa Regional Gallery.  $1000 will go to one lucky finalist who garners the most votes from visitors to the exhibition.”

The winning artist will receive $10,000 prize money, while their artwork will be added to the Noosa Council Corporate Art Collection. The 2016 Noosa Art Award exhibition will be on show from Friday 6 May until Sunday, 26 June, 2016.
