Tenders called as electric bus bid powers on

The search for a vehicle to power Noosa’s electric bus trial – a first for Queensland – has moved into high gear with Council calling for tenders.

“We’re searching for Australian and international manufacturers with a keen eye for innovation,” Council’s Planning and Infrastructure Director Martin Drydale said.

“We’ll be looking for manufacturers that are incorporating the latest advances in engine and battery technology from around the world into their vehicles.

“We want the best customer outcome from this project and there will be a strong preference to encourage Australian suppliers but tenders won’t be limited to Australian companies.”

During the trial, electric buses will replace conventional diesel buses on Noosa’s busy 627 route between Tewantin and Sunshine Beach.

Mr Drydale said Council was pleased to partner with TransLink for the trial, which could hail the start of a greener, more sustainable and marketable transport option for Noosa.

“Electric buses can be recharged with renewable energy and they offer the possibility of nil emissions, making them well worth road-testing,” Mr Drydale said.

He said Council hoped to commence the trial later this year. It follows an earlier joint Council-TransLink pre-feasibility study that identified electric buses as a cheaper public transport option than diesel buses on short-haul routes.

“Tenders close March 29 and we hope to appoint a manufacturer when Council meets in April,” Mr Drydale said.
