Lifting the lid on new bin technology

Litter collection has gone high-tech in Noosa with the trial of a new self-compacting solar-powered waste bin.

Council installed the innovative Big Belly Solar bin on a busy section of Hastings Street this week as part of a six-month trial of the new technology.

“The solar bin is loaded with technology including a solar-powered trash compactor unit and a GPS system which can send a message to Council’s waste department when the bin needs emptying,” says Council’s Waste Manager Wayne Schafer.

“The compaction feature stands to help keep the bin from overflowing and extend the time between rubbish collections. This could help reduce staff time and the number of rubbish trucks on the road.

“The bins are also equipped with technology to serve as a mobile Wi-Fi station, which may be something Council could look at in the future.”

Mr Schafer said Council would assess the bin’s value, at various sites, during the six-month trial.

“If all goes well Council could consider deploying more of these litter bins at other busy local precincts.”
