Council supports Queensland plastic bag ban

Noosa Council has joined the Noosa Community Biosphere Association’s (NCBA) call for a Queensland-wide ban on non-biodegradable plastic bags.

Noosa’s community jury called for a plastic bag ban in its waste management recommendations. It’s also consistent with Council’s Towards Zero Waste strategy.

“Council would like to see non-biodegradable shopping bags banned in Noosa so we’re pleased to support the NCBA campaign,” Noosa Councillor and local Clean Up Australia Day coordinator Joe Jurisevic said.

The Queensland Government has established an advisory council to look for ways to reduce packaging waste.

“The Environment Minister has spoken favourably of the role a plastic bag ban could have in reducing bags that pollute our waterways and kill local wildlife. We welcome those comments and the government’s interest in reducing plastic bag waste,” Cr Jurisevic said.

“A legislated state ban stands to be far more effective than a council-driven ban that would end at the shire boundary and require ratepayer funds to promote and enforce.

“However, if Queensland doesn’t follow the lead of other states and legislate a ban on plastic bags Council is prepared to look for other ways of reducing local plastic bag use.”

“It’s great to see strong community support for the Noosa Community Biosphere Association campaign for an end to plastic bags in Queensland,” Cr Jurisevic said.
