Art meets the environment as Floating Land works unveiled
Floating Land – Noosa’s biennial celebration of art in the environment – will transform Boreen Point’s Lake Cootharaba foreshore from October 2 – 5.
Noosa Council Libraries and Galleries Manager Kerri Contini says major artworks are now in place along the foreshore adjacent The Esplanade, Boreen Parade and Urunga Parade, ready for the October long weekend.
“The foreshore will be alive with natural beauty and dramatic artworks as well as a host of activities and entertainment the whole family can enjoy,” Ms Contini says of the four-day celebration.
Major sculptural pieces include two temples in the water, a wooden stingray hovering over the lake, while Kris Martin’s Earth Being – a large sculpted head – makes a bold statement rising two-metres from the water’s surface.
A flock of 2000 hand-made shorebirds makes for a captivating picture on the sandy beach, each made from natural and recycled materials, while Elizabeth Poole’s Weyba Warriors are sure to impress.
The Boreen Point program opens Friday with a range of activities, while a highlight will be the dawn jazz concert by the internationally-acclaimed David Bentley Jazz Trio, on the jetty on Saturday, October 3.
“Workshops include basket weaving on Friday at 10am, bookmaking with Sandra Ross at 10am Sunday, tarn rug-making with Anya La Zanya and a demonstration on how to make a raku pot.”
Music acts include folk reggae artist Sammy Ray Jones, classical guitarist Wendy Witt, and Anya and Ziko with their African and Celtic harp songs, plus a host of roving musicians.
“We’re also delighted to announce three special Heart of Gold International Short Film Festival film screenings on Saturday, Sunday and Monday,” Ms Contini said.
Other attractions include Twilight Markets from 4pm Friday, followed by a Muso Jam Night from 8pm at the Apollonian Hotel.
