Foreshore awash with art for Floating Land launch
The Tewantin foreshore will host three art installations and a soundscape as part of the official launch of Floating Land 2015: Reflect and Re-Imagine, on 29 August.
These installations, on the foreshore near Noosa Regional Gallery, and other Floating Land artworks to be revealed during the next four weeks, invite observers to pause and reflect on our place in the environment.
Lisa Brummel’s installation, Do Not Disturb, highlights our interaction with threatened shorebird species.
Cooroy, Tewantin and Noosaville State School students have helped created Do Not Disturb. Local Girl Guides also helped create cardboard bird silhouettes to represent the migratory shorebirds that visit the Noosa region.
Shell Midden Stories by Indigenous artist Lyndon Davis is a new midden of ceramic shells that reflects the times spent by generations of his people feasting by the river. The re-created midden refers to the huge midden that was once on the Tewantin foreshore.
Elizabeth Poole’s highly evocative Weyba Warriors will be revisited and re-interpreted. These life-size stick figures highlight the connection between water, earth, the community and the environment as a whole.
A soundscape, Wira - River Listening, created by composer Dr Leah Barclay complements the art installations. This interactive sound installation, based on a hydrophone in the Noosa River, and streamed globally, is accessible using a sound app on smartphones.
The current Floating Land: Reflect & Re-Imagine retrospective exhibition at Noosa Regional Gallery complements the artworks along Noosa River. The exhibition runs for seven weeks from 29 August to 18 October, showcasing more than a decade of Floating Land.
The exhibition will also feature works from the 2014 Noosa Biosphere Art Prize, Artist in Schools residency program. Primary and secondary students explored what it means to live, work and play in the Noosa biosphere and created artworks in the environment under the direction of artists Wendy McGrath and Wanda Bennett.
