Detours in place as $2M Cooroy drainage project begins

Traffic and pedestrian detours will be in place around Cooroy’s Garnet Street from mid-August, as work begins on a $2 million flood mitigation project.

Greenwood Grove developer WM Projects is upgrading Garnet Street’s Six Mile Creek crossing to improve the road’s flood immunity and mitigate flooding for residents.

Council Civil Construction Engineering Officer Leigh Crichton said Garnet Street will be closed to through-traffic, with access to the western end of the street via Mary River Road.

“It also means there will be no pedestrian access along the closed section of Garnet Street, with a detour in place via Wattle Street, Emerald Street, the railway footbridge and Mary River Road,” he said.

Detours will be in place for approximately 12 weeks.

“The closure will mean some inconvenience, particularly for pedestrians, and Council appreciates residents’ patience,” Mr Crichton said.

The project includes construction of three new banks of culverts beneath Garnet Street.

“This work is important to address flooding associated with a one-year average recurrence interval (Q1 or 63% AEP) rainfall event.

“The work also includes bulk earthworks, pavement upgrades, new stormwater infrastructure and water reticulation,” Mr Crichton said.

Council conditioned the developer to carry out the work as part of the approval for further stages of the Greenwood Grove development.

Detour signs will be in place. Work is set to commence 17 August.
