Mum's the word on new fitness program

Council is calling on new mums to help shape a proposed Get Out, Get Active fitness program for women with young children.

The future program will link local mums with free or low cost fitness activities to keep them active following child birth.

“Being a parent takes stamina, and exercise can certainly help you cope with the 24/7 demands of being a mum,” says Council community development officer Amanda Tie.

“This program aims to help mums with young children to get active and stay active.

“We’re asking local mums with children under three years of age to tell us what activities they might like to get involved in to get, and stay, active.”

Suggestions will help Council shape the new Active Mums program, for the Department of National Parks, Sport and Racing’s funding consideration as part of the 2016 Get Out, Get Active initiative.

“Part of the submission is to partner with organisations to improve the opportunities for women to get active,” Ms Tie said.

“So we are also looking for organisations interested in working with Council to help deliver free or low cost sport and active recreation activities specifically suitable for new or recent mums.”

Partners will need to consider how they might encourage mums to stay engaged with the activity beyond the 10-week program.

Partners can be either not-for-profit groups or local businesses, but they must be able to provide free or low-cost sport and active recreation activities to participants.

Mums can email their suggestions to Council at commdev@noosa.qld.gov.au by 12 August.

Organisations interested in helping deliver the program should also contact Council via email.
