Hidden landscapes feature in Gallery's new exhibitions

Artists Kym Barrett and Thomas Sydow exhibit their distinct works at Noosa Regional Gallery from 23 July to 23 August.

In From Sense to Sensuality, artist, Thomas Sydow, shares his colourful and multi-layered abstract artworks, inspired by a deep fascination with Australian natural landscapes and the design of nature.

Natural materials feature as a backdrop, with the artist favouring handmade paper and bark, as well as traditional canvas in his work, applying a Sgraffito technique.

“Over an abstract design, inspired by natural designs and structures, I apply several layers of paint and metallic leaf, then remove the final layer of paint with the tip of a needle to reveal the original design with colour-oscillating, three-dimensional effects,” he says.

“My technique continually evolves, as I experiment with new designs, mediums, colours, paints, sizes and special effects,” says Sydow.

“Thomas Sydow’s exhibition invites viewers in to a window of his intricate and delicate interpretations of the Australian landscape. A video installation by Stephen Hamacek will also accompany the exhibition for a fully immersive experience,” says Noosa Regional Gallery Director Nina Shadforth.

Control and chaos collide in Kym Barrett’s Wax and Wabi Sabi exhibition, delivering sophisticated and sensitive abstract responses that interprets and explores the Japanese concept of the wabi sabi aesthetic - the art of finding beauty in imperfection and profundity in nature.

The Wax and Wabi Sabi and From Sense to Sensuality exhibitions will be officially launched on Friday 24 July, 6pm and all are welcome to attend the free opening event, hosted by the Friends Noosa Regional Gallery. A cash bar will be available.
