Noosa dog owners take the lead
Council’s acting local laws manager Phil Amson has praised Noosa dog owners for de-sexing their pets.
Mr Amson says Council’s recent door-to-door inspection program found Noosa to have one of the highest rates of desexed dogs in the state.
“It’s great to see people doing the right thing and heeding Council’s responsible pet ownership message when it comes to de-sexing their pets, with almost 90% of dogs in the shire de-sexed,” he said.
The inspection however also found more than 1300 unregistered dogs.
“That result is not so good and we anticipate the total number of unregistered animals to be around 1600 by completion of the inspection program,” Mr Amson said.
“Dog registration is important – a dog registration tag is the first step in reuniting lost pets with their owners, and the registration data helps Council ensure services such as waste bags, litter bins and off-leash areas are provided where most needed.”
Council officers have been visiting properties across the shire as part of the systematic inspection program carried out in accordance with Section 44 of the Animal Management (Cats & Dogs) Act 2008.
“Dog owners should also check with Council that their address and contact details are correct, as well as ensure their microchip provider has their current details as this all helps us quickly reconnect a lost dog with its owner,” Mr Amson said.
“To avoid a fine pet owners should register their dogs as soon as possible. Dogs born after 1 July 2009 must also be micro-chipped.”
