Weyba Creek access improvements

Council has signed off a Weyba Creek formal access point and kayak/canoe launching facility as part of next year’s capital works budget.

The decision follows community consultation over severe creek bank erosion at Weyba Esplanade.

Cr Frank Pardon said residents suggested the formalised creek access as an alternative to a proposed fishing platform.

“The creek has been loved to death in recent years and unfortunately its popularity has taken a toll.

“We’ve lost several metres of creek bank from years of foot traffic – people climbing in and out of the water and walking over the riparian areas to use the old ropes swings as well as launch kayaks and canoes. It has left the area looking worse for wear,” Cr Pardon said.

“This new, formalised access point will provide a designated entry to the creek to help ease pressure on the rest of the creek bank,” Cr Pardon said.

Council is proposing a creek access point/kayak and canoe launching facility for the area near the Weyba Esplanade picnic tables.

Cr Pardon thanked residents for their input and support.

“Some residents would have liked to have seen the old rope swings remain but with erosion undermining many of the tree roots it’s created some serious safety risks. The constant foot traffic from people using the rope swings has also exacerbated the damage.

“On a positive note, residents have told us anti-social behaviour along the creek bank has decreased significantly since the swings were removed.”

Council will liaise with the state government around design and construction.
