Safety inspection triggers urgent footpath closure

Noosa Council has closed a section of footpath along William Street at Noosaville in response to safety concerns.

Noosa Council Infrastructure Planning and Design Manager Nick Wellwood said that the footpath was closed due to undermining and settlement of the footpath due to revetment wall erosion, trip hazards and rusted handrail connections.

He asked residents to take care around the affected area, which Council has closed off with safety fencing. It follows a safety inspection carried out this morning.

Mr Wellwood said Council had been in negotiations with an adjacent jetty occupier over planned repairs to the footpath, but urgent remedial action was now required as the area had deteriorated.

“Now that there is an immediate safety issue Council has had no choice but to close the footpath and commence planning for urgent remediation work,” Mr Wellwood said.

“We will be consulting with affected stakeholders as required, including the jetty occupier, and we hope to rectify the issues as soon as practical to ensure public safety.”

Mr Wellwood said the closure would mean changed conditions for pedestrians.

“We appreciate residents’ patience while the closure and rectification work is underway,” he said.
