Begin a new chapter – join a book club!
You only have to look at the success of shows such as the ABC’s The Book Club to see Australians’ growing interest in book clubs, says Noosa Library Service Collections and Services Coordinator Tracey King.
“Noosa Library Service recognises book clubs’ social value and role in supporting reading, and we currently have more than 40 active book clubs,” she says.
“Members have more than 236 book club sets available for use and the library also helps connect people with book clubs in their area. This is how the first men’s book club was created recently,” Ms King says.
Noosa Library Service hosts special book club events for members and anyone interested in joining. The Book Club Winter Soiree is the next planned event, to be held at Noosaville Library in June with guest speaker Sarah Armstrong, author of His Other House.
“Along with the chance of new friendships, book clubs provide an opportunity for conversation, and even controversial debate at times. The more controversial the book, the more stimulating the conversation seems to be,” Ms King says.
“Recently Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg announced his New Year’s resolution to read a book every two weeks, and not surprisingly the world followed his lead, with Amazon selling out of Zuckerberg’s first choice within 24 hours.”
The Book Club Winter Soiree will be held on Thursday 4 June from 6.30pm. Entry is $8 to be paid at the door. Book a place by phoning 5329 6555 or online at www.libraries.noosa.qld.gov.au.
“The Soiree will also feature stories from other book clubs, and the all-important chance to share ideas for new titles. Annie’s Books on Peregian will provide titles to browse from and attendees can nominate favourites for the Library to purchase as book club sets. Join the world of book clubs and share the love,” Ms King says.
