Noosa Library Service seeks volunteer financial literacy tutors
Noosa Library Service is seeking volunteer tutors to help deliver its new Dollars Making Sense program, which will provide adults with skills to better understand their finances.
Offered at no charge to participants, Dollars Making Sense has been made possible through a $46,000 Financial Literacy Australia grant.
Noosa Library Service’s Coordinator Library Collections and Services, Tracey King, said the initiative would build on Council’s existing literacy and numeracy support programs.
“Noosa Library Service is seeking volunteer tutors to deliver the program, and undertake a free 12 week training course (3 hours per week) commencing in May 2015. Once they successfully complete the training, volunteer tutors will receive a Certificate in Volunteer Community Adult Literacy Tutoring,” Ms King said.
“The role of volunteer financial literacy tutors is invaluable in assisting participants to become empowered to overcome financial disadvantage and to have a positive impact on the financial wellbeing of those struggling with day-to-day monetary issues,” she said.
“With increased complexities from electronic banking, growing reliance on credit cards, and the financial contracts required when buying a phone or renting a house, financial literacy impacts on all aspects of our daily lives.
“Making informed financial decisions on everything from understanding the value of a simple budget to what to do with your superannuation and planning for retirement is especially important as Australians are now living longer and technology is evolving rapidly.”
Since 2003, the Noosa Library Service has assisted over 2600 participants across 1000 adult learning programs.
