Council's plan to manage weeds and pest animals in the shire

Weeds and pest animals are one of the most significant threats to Noosa’s biodiversity, and Council is asking residents to have their say on how they are managed in Noosa, through its draft Pest Management Plan.

Council’s Principal Environment Officer Peter Milne stated the importance of managing our pests.

“Weeds and pest animals degrade natural ecosystems and agricultural landscapes, threaten biodiversity and interfere with human health and recreation,” Mr Milne said.

Council, government agencies, environment groups and local agencies were instrumental in the development of the plan, which demonstrates a clear commitment to managing pests in Noosa.

“This draft plan is not simply a statement of Council’s pest management responsibilities but a plan of attack that acknowledges the roles of a wide range of organisations, groups and individuals that all have a stake in managing weeds and pest animals.”

The plan establishes local priorities, strategies and actions to address the impacts of weeds and pest animals, identifies stakeholders and recognises their roles and responsibilities. It is not possible to control all pests at the same time. Importantly the plan provides a priority listing of pest species that will be a focus for pest management and control.

The plan is open for consultation until 7 April 2015.

Residents are encouraged to view the draft plan and have their say at Your Say Noosa. Copies of the plan are also available at Council’s libraries and customer service centre.
