March 9, celebrating our community victory

Next Monday - March 9th celebrates a special day for Noosa; two years since the community won back its local Council and its voice in local issues.

To mark the landslide victory that restored Noosa Council, a permanent  exhibition has been mounted at the Council Chambers in Tewantin, taking viewers through the tortuous process and the bruising campaign that ended with the historic win.

The exhibition "Noosa - a victory for community" and a short video to accompany it will be on show at the Council chambers in Tewantin this Sunday - March 8th between 10 and 3, and then from Monday onwards - whenever the Council offices are open, except when the chambers are being used for meetings.

Mayor Noel Playford said the exhibition tells the story of a passionate community.  "From the massive protest that erupted when Noosa first heard the Council was under threat, to the anger and despair when the axe fell, through to the joyful celebration on March 9th two years ago."

"These pictures and memories remind us how powerful a community can be when it mobilises to fight for something as important as lifestyle and environment," he said.

The exhibition has been pieced together by the Mayor's wife, Diana Playford.  She said it was a tribute to those who never lost faith.  "For me" she said "this is part of passing down a message to the next generation.  It is worth fighting for what you believe in."
