Libraries get 'appy

Noosa Council has made a cyber-leap, receiving $20,000 from State Library of Queensland to buy a ‘smart table' to extend the libraries' technology services.

The smart table has a large interactive horizontal screen that looks like a coffee table and allows many people to use it at once.

It will be the focal point of a new program, "Get ‘appy together" which brings together people of all ages to explore new technology, create content and engage with modern app-based formats.

Collections and Programs Co-ordinator, Tracey King, is excited about the future workshops that can now be offered by libraries using the table.

‘There will be interactive workshops for all members of the community who love to see and learn about new technologies,' she said.

‘The world of devices is becoming increasingly smaller – tablets, mini-tablets, smartphones and smartwatches which can be quite challenging for people learning to use them.

The great thing about the table is that you can learn in a group and create as a group, taking away the isolation and scariness of using new gadgets on your own.'

There will be workshops at both Cooroy and Noosaville Libraries include creating photo-stories, writers' brainstorming sessions, creating newsletters for youth, and brain-health gaming for seniors.

The smart table will also be available for community groups to use for their own programs and can also be used to access key council information such as flood mapping and land use plans.

This project is made possible with financial assistance from the Queensland Government through State Library of Queensland's Technology Trendsetters program.
