Minor delays as prep work for intersection upgrade begins
Council will begin pre-construction work on the Hilton Terrace/Ernest Street intersection upgrade later this month.
Contractors will relocate Energex and Telstra infrastructure in preparation for the new roundabout and Hilton Terrace road upgrade to begin in the second half of the year.
Project Officer Jaro Bauleka said motorists should expect minor delays from late May onwards.
A new roundabout will better manage traffic and improve safety at the Hilton Terrace/Ernest Street intersection, by making it easier for motorists turning right out of Ernest Street.
Council will also provide a new pathway from the pedestrian crossing outside Noosa Lakes Resort to the Wallace Park precinct.
The project will relocate the existing bus stop on Hilton Terrace, at the corner of Ernest Street, further and provide safety improvements for cyclists through the provision of on road cycle lanes. The two existing bus stops on Ernest Street, adjacent to the Goodchap Street intersection, will be closed.
Mr Bauleka said the works would significantly improve the busy intersection, which sees some 17,000 vehicles movement a day.
“A recent transport study ranked the Hilton Terrace/Ernest Street intersection highest on the list of Council-controlled intersections in need of an upgrade, so this work will vastly improve this junction for motorists,” he said. “The implementation of this roundabout aligns with the Noosa Design Principles where the safety of all users has been improved, and retains the village vibe by avoiding the use of traffic signals”.
Contractors will formalise the Earl Street carpark adjacent Tait-Duke Community Cottage as part of the project.
“Council appreciates residents’ and motorists’ patience while the preparatory work is underway,” Mr Bauleka said.
“We will keep nearby residents up-to-date with periodic letter box drops.”
