Rooftop movie screening to raise Earth Hour awareness

Noosa Council will host a free outdoor movie night this Saturday to celebrate Earth Hour.

Starry Nights Outdoor Movies will present Bee Movie from 6.30pm on the Cooroy Library rooftop, ahead of Earth Hour at 8.30pm.

“It will be a fun night for the whole family and an opportunity to learn about Earth Hour and how we can all reduce emissions,” says Council’s Carbon Reduction Project Officer Annie Nolan.

Ms Nolan will be on hand to answer questions about Council’s ambitious 2026 zero net-emissions target.

“Simply turning off lights when not needed is one way we can all reduce emissions, with positive implications for the planet,” Ms Nolan said.

There are many other things we can all do every day to help reduce our power consumption and therefore emissions, and in turn save ourselves money, says Ms Nolan.

“Turning off modern appliances often puts them into standby mode, and so they are still drawing power, contributing to emissions and electricity consumption charges.

“Standby power could be responsible for up to 10% of your electricity bill. Australia wide that’s a lot of wasted energy and greenhouse gases being emitted for appliances that are not being used.

“So as part of Earth Hour this year, start switching appliances off at the wall to save money and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”

Earth hour is held annually to encourage the community to switch off non-essential electric lights for one hour as a symbol of commitment to the planet.

It began in 2007 when Sydney turned off its lights for one hour.  Since then the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) initiative has grown to include more than 7000 cities and towns across more than 187 countries.

“Come along on Saturday to support Earth Hour. It won’t be a late night as it’s lights out at 8:30pm.”

The movie night starts at 6.30pm, Saturday, March 24 on the Cooroy Library rooftop, Maple Street, Cooroy.
