$28M capital works program delivery on track

Council’s Infrastructure Services Director Carl Billingham says Council is well on track to deliver its $28M capital works program.

“We’re where we planned to be at this stage in the financial year. We’re able to ramp up construction now that we’ve finalised the planning and design phase,” he said.

Work is under way on a $700,000 upgrade of the intersection of Poinciana Avenue and Moorindil Street at Tewantin and a $1.5M Hilton Terrace/Ernest Street intersection upgrade is set to start in March.

“These big-ticket projects will vastly improve safety for motorists and pedestrians at these intersections, which our recent traffic study identified as the intersections most in need of upgrade,” Mr Billingham said.

In the hinterland, Council will begin sealing Donnellys Road in April. The second stage of Pomona’s Station Street upgrade is also about to start, bringing a new bus turnaround and improved car parking to boost safety at the school.

Mr Billingham said the $1.7M Weyba Road upgrade was nearing completion. The project includes new landscaping and traffic islands as well as a reseal of the road.

Meanwhile work on Cootharaba’s $1.76M Kinmond Creek Road culvert replacement is complete, and wound up finishing under budget.

“We’ve appointed a contractor for the $6.5M Park Road boardwalk. We’re also set to upgrade the final piece of the Main Beach boardwalk in May, and it should be completed prior to the Christmas holidays,” Mr Billingham said.

“We’re tracking well this year and, providing we don’t experience any long wet weather periods, we will complete the program with sufficient carry-over to ensure a smooth transition from this year’s program to the next.”
