More than 30 residents will carry the Queen’s Baton through Noosa on Monday, March 26, in preparation for the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

The Noosa leg of the Queen’s Baton Relay, with its 7km route, will be one of the largest community engagement activities undertaken locally. There will be two community celebrations – one at Read Park in Tewantin, and on Noosa Main Beach.

Queen’s Baton Relay Working Group Chairman for Noosa, Cr Joe Jurisevic, urged residents to visit the website to find out where and when each participant will run with the baton.

“Come and support our batonbearers along the route and share in the magic of the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games,” Cr Jurisevic said.

The Queen’s Baton will depart Tewantin’s Read Park at 3.52pm, arriving at Noosa Main Beach at 5.30pm.

“Road closures will be in place but residents are welcome to watch from the roadside anywhere along the course.

“Alternatively, there will be plenty of entertainment at Tewantin’s Read Park from around 3.15pm, prior to the baton’s departure at 3.52pm.

“Free entertainment will also be provided on Noosa Main Beach from 4.30-6.30pm, with the baton to arrive at 5.30pm.”

Cr Jurisevic said residents travelling by car should arrive early and be prepared to stay put at viewing areas until roads reopen. For the full list of road closures, visit the website.

“Council encourages those attending the main viewing areas – Read Park (Tewantin), Noosa Main Beach, and Noosaville Lions Park – to walk or ride to the event and, if driving, make use of temporary event parking.

“It will be free to park all day at Noosa District Sports Complex, just a short walk from Read Park, Tewantin. A Tewantin Noosa RSL shuttle bus will be travelling from the sports complex to Read Park for those who require assistance,” Cr Jurisevic said.

“Parking will be available at Chaplin Park, Noosaville from 12noon – 3.30pm to park. It will reopen for vehicles to leave from 4:30pm – 5.30pm. This is ideal for those watching the relay along Gympie Terrace.

“Residents attending the Noosa Main Beach festivities can park for free at Noosa Heads Lions Park. It will be available from 12 noon – 4.30 pm to park, and will reopen for vehicles to leave from 6pm – 7.30pm.”
