Work set to begin on a world-class upgrade of Noosa’s boardwalk

Construction of a new boardwalk to replace the old section between Little Cove and the Noosa National Park entrance, is set to begin after Easter.

Noosa Council’s Project Manager Adam Britton says the design will create an iconic boardwalk in keeping with the natural setting.

“It has some outstanding features and will reduce long-term maintenance costs,” he said.

“We are using ‘accoya’, a specially treated pine decking board product which is reputedly a world-leading, long-life sustainable wood with a 50-year guarantee not to rot.

“We have been trialing this sustainable pine decking for 18 months and it is exceptional.

“The new boardwalk will also have a hardwood timber supporting structure and long-life aluminium balustrades.

“We will remove the existing barriers and improve the grass section at the Mitti Street carpark to allow surfers to put down their boards and relax.

“Council developed the design through extensive consultation with a project reference group made up of representatives from over 20 local community groups.

“We have had input from experts like Tom Wegener, a world famous local surfboard maker, on timber selection for the handrails.

“The new $7M boardwalk will complement Noosa’s World Surfing Reserve status and be used by surfers and visitors from across the globe.

“Widths range generally from 2.5m up to 5m, double the width of the existing boardwalk, designed to maximise the pedestrian experience while minimising environmental impact.

Mr Britton said Council appreciated residents’ patience whilst the work is under way.

“Park Road will reduce down to one lane under traffic lights during the piling works and residents and visitors should plan for expected delays similar to the previous stages,” he said.

“We will lose no more than seven car parks during the works for a temporary construction site compound.

“A temporary walkway will be established to allow pedestrians to walk from Little Cove to the National Park.

“There will be stairs so residents and visitors should take this into account when planning their journey.

“We ask the community to bear with us and look forward to a result we can all be proud of. The long term benefits of upgrading this section of the boardwalk will be well worth it.”

Council has awarded the construction contract to the highly-regarded J Hutchinson Pty Ltd. Council hopes to complete the work before Christmas.
