Council seeks partners for Active Teens Program

Noosa Council is seeking expressions of interest from local organisations and businesses to deliver its new Active Teens Program after 180 teenagers took part in a survey to identify the types of activities they would like included in the program.

Activities that the young people would like to see as part of the program include: stand-up-paddle, boxing, gym (weights and cardio), surfing, yoga, swimming, kayaking, martial arts, self-defence, tennis and mountain biking.

The program, set to launch in March 2018, has $16,500 in 'Game On Queensland’ grant funding through the state government’s 'Embracing 2018 Legacy Program'.

“The program is designed to provide low-cost activities that encourage 13 - 17 year olds to participate in at least 60 minutes of ‘moderate to vigorous’ physical activity per day and it is a great opportunity for local sport and recreation providers to showcase their wares” said Alan (Fox) Rogers Council’s Director of Community Services.

“With Australia’s population heading towards a gold medal in obesity, and studies showing that today’s teenagers lead a more sedentary life style than previous generations, the Active Teens program gives young people the chance to try some fun activities which they then might continue for years to come.” he said

A 2016/2017 AUSPLAY Survey results showed only 47.6% of teenagers aged 15 to 17 participated in physical activity three times per week or more.

Council is inviting interested sport and active recreation businesses or not-for-profit groups to contact its Community Development branch at commdev@noosa.qld.gov.au or by phoning 5329 6500, no later than January 15.
