Teenagers needed to help shape new physical activity program
Council is calling on Noosa teenagers to help it shape a new program targeting 13-to-17-year-olds who need a hand to stay active.
“Statistics tell us that for numerous reasons, including study commitments, many teenagers aren’t getting enough exercise or physical activity,” says Council’s Community Development Manager Alison Hamblin.
Active Teens, to start next year, will offer 13-to-17-year-olds easy access to low-cost activities to help them stay active.
“But before the new program can begin, we need to find out the sorts of activities teenagers would take part in if made available at low cost,” Ms Hamblin said.
Activities could include stand-up paddling, surfing, boxing, mountain biking, yoga or belly dancing.
“So we’re calling for teenagers aged between 13 and 17 to jump online and fill out a quick survey. We’ll use the information we collect to tailor the program to their needs,” Ms Hamblin said.
“For health benefits, young people aged 13 to 17 years should be doing at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity every day,” she said.
“2016/2017 AUSPLAY Survey results showed only 47.6% of teenagers aged 15 to 17 participated in physical activity at least three times per week – lower than the stats for adults of all ages – and only 24.7% participated seven times per week.”
The Queensland Government provided a $16,500 Game On Queensland grant to Noosa Council through the Embracing 2018 Legacy Program.
The survey is online now via Council's YourSay Noosa website. It will be open until Friday, December 15.
Ms Hamblin said Council was also keen to hear from sport and active recreation businesses or not-for-profit groups interested in partnering with Council to deliver the activities.
