10,000 new garden waste bins now in service

Council’s Waste Manager Wayne Schafer has praised residents for putting their new garden waste recycling bins to use so quickly.

Council has delivered around 10,000 bins to residents across urban parts of the shire.

“Any residents who’ve not yet received a garden waste bin, but believe they are eligible for one, should call Council as soon as possible on (07) 5329 6500,” Mr Schafer said.

Around 80% of households are already filling their garden waste bins each fortnight and putting them out to be emptied.

“Not only are the bins well-used, contamination with other rubbish has been very low, which is fantastic,” he said.

“By making sure to only place organic garden waste such as grass clippings, tree branches and palm fronds into the bins, residents are helping to ensure that the mulch we create from the garden waste contains no unwanted extras.”

Mr Schafer praised residents’ enthusiasm for recycling garden waste.

Cooroy’s Anica Maetlin was so keen to receive her new garden waste recycling bin she met the bin delivery team at the bottom of her driveway.

“It’s a wonderful idea,” she said.

Diverting garden waste from landfill significantly reduces Noosa’s greenhouse gas emissions, reduces the need to increase the size of the landfill and helps Noosa Shire become both environmentally and economically more sustainable.

Mr Schafer urged residents to keep their garden waste bins free of contaminants to help Council continue to supply residents with high quality free mulch.

Council is also trialling the mulch with local farms and hopes to extend this market further in the future.
