Council and CSIRO look to sustainability institute

Council will partner with the CSIRO’s Data61 research unit to develop a business case for a Noosa sustainability institute.

If successful, says Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington, the proposal could position Noosa as a world leader in sustainability and deliver significant economic benefits for the shire.

“CSIRO's Data61 unit jumped at the opportunity to help us develop a business case around a possible research facility or think-tank," Mayor Wellington said.

"CSIRO has ready access to government departments as well as universities and leading academics. They are perfectly positioned to help us develop this concept."

Data61 is a leading digital research and data-innovation CSIRO business unit.

“Council is focused on sustainability and we’re committed to leading by example. A Noosa-based sustainability institute will greatly enhance these efforts, offering opportunities to attract world-leading research, plus develop partnerships with universities and other stakeholders,” the Mayor said.

He said the Data61 proposal to develop a local institute could deliver a wide range of local benefits.

"In particular, it could establish Noosa as a base for cutting-edge sustainability practices, providing inspiration to both the Council and the community. It may also boost eco-tourism opportunities and potentially provide support for local sustainability start-up businesses.

“This proposal is a great fit with our Local Economic Plan. It has the long-term potential to cement Noosa's status as a global leader in sustainability and sensitive human development,” the Mayor said.

CSIRO will investigate options and develop the concept in several stages. An initial $38,990 investment by Council, to be approved as part of the upcoming budget review process, will fund the initial research phase.

“This is a fantastic opportunity we have before us. Everyone at Council is excited by the possibilities this project may deliver,” the Mayor said.
