Controlling feral dogs

Back

Residents in the rural areas of the Noosa Shire whose livestock or families are being harassed or attacked by wild dogs, dingos or foxes should contact Customer Service at Noosa  Council and provide detailed information about the nature of the problem.

Council's pest animal control officers will contact the property owner to discuss the problem and work with the landholder on a pest animal control program. It is important to note that rural property owners have a responsibility to control feral animals on their land.

Council supports property owners activities to control feral animals by providing information, traps, arranging baiting programs and assisting with humane removal.  When a council program is undertaken to control feral animals within a specific area, appropriate signage is erected to inform neighbouring residents and visitors of the actions being taken.

Over the past 8 months, Council has been actively engaged in mitigating the feral dog problem in the western area of the Shire by removing 38 feral dogs . Council will continue to be proactive and work to reduce the feral dog problem in that area. It is important to be aware that unrestrained, unregistered dogs that harass stock can be destroyed. Owners are encouraged to ensure that their domestic dogs are not allowed to roam free, hunt in packs and chase or injure stock.
